1. The SuperMemo SM-2 Algorithm Explained
Every flashcard in German Buddy is governed by an adaptive implementation of the SuperMemo SM-2 algorithm. Instead of reviewing an entire deck blindly every day, each card maintains three dynamic variables:
-
Easiness Factor (EF): A multiplier initialized at
2.5that adjusts upward when you recall a phrase effortlessly (Easy) and downward when a phrase feels challenging (Hard or Again). - Repetition Count (n): Tracks consecutive successful active recalls. If a card is missed (Grade 0), the repetition chain resets to 1-day reinforcement while preserving long-term familiarity metadata.
-
Inter-Repetition Interval (I): Progresses from 1 day to 6 days, and thereafter multiplies by the card’s Easiness Factor (
I(n) = I(n-1) × EF), scheduling reviews at 15 days, 38 days, 95 days, and beyond.
